GCSE PE The Circulatory System

  1. THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM

    • MOVEMENT OF BLOOD
      • PULMONARY CIRCULATION
        • This is where blood becomes oxygenated
          • Deoxygenated blood travels from the heart to the lungs.
            • Blood is oxygenated
              • Blood then travels back to the heart to be pumped (delivered) around the body.
      • SYSTEMIC CIRCULATION
        • Oxygenated blood travels around the body to the cells where it is needed
          • Oxygenated blood (02) is delivered & Deoxygenated Blood (CO2) is picked up
            • This is then carried back to the heart.
      • 2
    • THE HEART
      • The Heart contracts and relaxes pumping blood around the body. This is called a heartbeat.
      • A performer's heartbeat will increase with exercise.
        • WHY???
      • 1
    • 3 COMPONENTS
    • BLOOD VESSELS (3 TYPES)
      • CAPILLARIES
        • LINK the Arteries to the Veins
        • Extremely thin walls to allow 02 & CO2 Pass through their walls
      • VEINS
        • CARRY DEOXYGENATED BLOOD - C02
        • THINNER WALLS THAN ARTERIES
        • Valves ensure that blood does not flow backwards
      • ARTERIES
        • CARRY OXYGENATED BLOOD - 02
        • THICK WALLS
        • No Valves
      • 3
  2. OTHER FUNCTIONS OF THE SYSTEM

    • PROTECTION
      • Antibodies carried in the blood to fight infection.
      • Blood clots to seal cuts and wounds.
    • REGULATES BODY TEMPERATURE
      • Blood absorbs body heat and carries it to the lungs and skin to be released.
