1. What’s a parabola?

   • A u-shaped curve with certain specific properties. Formally, a parabola is defined as follows: For a given point, called the focus, and a given line not through the focus, called the directrix, a parabola is the locus of points such that the distance to the focus equals the distance to the directrix.

2. What is the vertex of a parabola?

   • Parabolas always have a lowest point (or a highest point, if the parabola is upside-down). This point, where the parabola changes direction, is called the "vertex". If the quadratic is written in the form y = a(x – h)2 + k, then the vertex is the point (h, k).

   • The axis of symmetry of a parabola is a vertical line that divides the parabola into two congruent halves.
