THE BAROQUE

1. ARCHITECTURE

   • -Incorporate a sense of movement.
     • -Curved cornices and borken pediments forming curves and spirals.
       • -Elliptical and oval shapes into floor designs.
         • -Movement was exaggerated through the effects of light and shade.
           • -Interiors were elaborately decorated and featured columns (Solomonic) and impressive domes.
   • FANOUS ARCHITECTS: Bernini and Borromini.
     • FAMOUS CHURCHES: 'Palace of Versailles' and 'Le Nôtre'

2. PAINTING

   • -Colour over drawing. Bright, warm colours, oil paintings.
     • -Focus on light (chiaroscuro).
       • -Realism. Religious or mythological scenes.
         • -Movement in the compositions. Used techniques (foreshortening, asymmetry, undulating lines).
   • FAMOUS PAINTERS: Caravaggio, Poussin and Rubens.
     • FAMOUS PAINTINGS: 'The Three graces', 'The Entombment of Christ' and 'The Night Watch'.

3. SCULPTURE

   • -Represent movement and naturalism.
     • - Figures captured in the middle of an action. They appear unstable and likely to fall.
       • - Curved lines and folds of the clothing made them more dynastic.
         • - Marble and bronze were the most popular materials.
           • -Religious and mythological scenes
   • FAMOUS CHARACTERS: Bernini and Girardon.
     • FAMOUS SCULPTURES: 'Apollo and Daphne'and 'Apollo and the Nymphs'
