chapter 10: Baker Farm
When Thoreau sits with the Field family, he acts polite and understanding to their situation.
Thoreau states, “ I drank to genuine hospitality the heartiest draught I could. I am not squeamish in such cases when manners are concerned.” (Thoreau, 229).
- Although Thoreau usually does not tolerate society and interacting with people, this family was different to him.
- He has shared a moment of warmth and humor with that family, probably because their situation reminded him of his situation before which made him enjoy their company and he feel connected to them.
- Although Thoreau usually does not tolerate society and interacting with people, this family was different to him.
Thoreau states, "Once it chanced that I stood in the very abutment of a rainbow's arch, which filled the lower stratum of the atmosphere, tinging the grass and leaves around, and dazzling me as if I looked through colored crystal."
- In his description of the rainbow, you can tell how this spiritual experience transforms Thoreau's perception of nature that is around him.
This chapter also includes a lot of spiritual symbols and mentions many of the traditional Christian beliefs that Thoreau has experienced.
