Lexical Approach
Definition: It is an approach which objective is to teach English through lexical chunks (collocations or fixed phrases). This theory states that language is formed by numerous every day phrases that combined, give as a result a coherent speech, and just a little part of the language is "new creation". Grammar does not play a main role.
The role of lexis is emphazised. Language is seen as made up of lexical chunks or collacations rather than grammatical structures.
Principles of taking Lexical Approach: Teacher teacher teaches lexical chunks or collocations such as: out of my mind, if I were you, totally convinced, etc. and adds more vocabulary to be used with these collocations. 1) The fundamental principle of lexican approach is as Lewis stated " "Language is grammaticalized lexis, not lexicalized grammar" This means that teacher must be worried about teaching every day phrases, since grammar is not playing the central role.
The problems of taking the Lexical Approach: I think that it is not easy to teach just phrases as the base of a class. I think that it is important to teach collocations, but in context. I could not say that this approach does not work because I have not used it as a teaching method in my lessons, to do that I must be trained.
Implementing Lexical Approach in the classroom; I think that if I had to work with this approach, I would like to use it as a subject, to teach this important phrases, which would help my students to speak in a natural way (more like a native does), and I would have to see some models in order to do it well.
