monitoring measurement&control

1. control systems

   • central heating system; this is a feedback system, similar to the greenhouse temperature and control system
   • burglar and security system; movement sensors detect intruders in alarmed zones
   • electronic toys and games, such as the will gaming console uses weight and movement sensors to display the position of the image
   • automatic doors; are widley used in ligts and storys and rely on detecting motion
   • smart meters; these devices give householders a reading of their current electricity and gas consumption
   • traffic control systems; modern traffic lights systems make use of sensors to detect current traffic movement and also cameras indicate further details of traffic problems
   • car parking systems; are used to show motorists which car parks have spcases as they drive to the centre of town, and they also have automatic barriers
   • robotics; has had a major impact on industry and computer controlled machines, robots are built for purposes, such as to paint or assemble cars on a production line

2. output devices

   • actuator; is the motor and related linkage that is used in a control system, it may be used to life a car park barrier or open a lift door
   • lights; lights can be the output from a control system; they can be used in traffic lights as warning lights on a control panel
   • buzzers; are used to give an audible output such as alarms or warning, for example in an intensive care unit in hospital
   • robotic arm; a computer controlled device that can be moved to a certain location using position sensors as park of a feedback loop

3. sensors

   • light; determine when to switch on and off street lights
   • infrareed sensor; detect the heat given of a person as infrared detects a break in a beam
   • geiger counter; determine the amount of radio activity
   • thermistor; control heat in a room
   • pressure sensory; detect the amount of pressure in something
   • motion sensor; in burglar alarms
   • sound sensor; check noise coming from an aircraft to make sure it is within the agreed levels
   • water sensor; measures rainfall
   • anemometer; measures wind speed by sailors
   • acid sensor; measures acidity in water

4. at home

   • washing machines
   • microwaves
   • dishwashers
   • kettles
   • fridges

5. at work

   • air conditioning
   • lifts
   • automatic doors
   • factory robots

6. outside the home

   • traffic lights
   • car parks
   • lifts
   • theme park rides
   • remotes
