36. Verbs with two objects 4

1. Verb + (object) + bare infinitive

   • Cuando let y make tiene un objeto, éste va seguido de un infinitivo simple
     • They made us wait outside the harbour for hours
   • Utilizamos un to-infinitive después de una forma pasiva de make
     • We were made to wait outside…
   • También podemos utilizar have + object + bare infinitive cuando decimos que hemos provocado a alguien para hacer algo
     • I had him wait for me while I went swimming
   • Cuando los verbos de percepción tienen un objeto, éste va seguido de una forma -ing o un infinitivo simple
     • I felt it stinging me across the stomach
       • La forma -ing, se usa tanto para decir que una acción está en curso o para enfatizar que continúa por un tiempo
     • I felt it sting me across the stomach
       • El infinitivo simple, en cambio, cuando una acción está completada o queremos enfatizar que duró por un tiempo corto
   • Utilizamos un infinitivo simple en ciertas frases idiomáticas con dare, make, let y hear
   • Después de help, podemos usar tanto un infinitivo desnudo como to-infinitive
     • Some of the villagers helped carry / to carry me back to my taxi

2. Verb + object + to-infinitive / -ing

   • Tenemos que incluir un objeto antes de to-infinitive en frases activas (18)
     • A number of people had encourage me to go to the coral reefs…
   • Algunos verbos no pueden incluir un objeto antes de to-infinitive (19)
     • I decided to go ahead
   • Con algunos verbos tenemos que incluir la preposición for antes de un objeto + to-infinitive
     • I arranged for the taxi to collect me

3. Verbo + objeto / posesivo + -ing

   • Algunos verbos pueden ir seguidos tanto por un objeto o, más formalmente, una forma posesiva (20)
     • I really appreciated them / their looking after me so well
   • Solo podemos utilizar una forma posesiva para hablar sobre una persona o un grupo de gente
     • I’ll never forget it swimming towards me
   • No utilizamos una forma posesiva si el objeto es complejo
     • I really enjoyed Arun and his sister showing me around
