Protective stabilization

1. What is?

   • Is the act of physically limiting the body movements of the child to facilitate dental procedures and decrease possible injuries to the child and/or dentist

2. How?

   • Holding a child’s head with one hand
   • A whole body wrap
   • Papoose Board
   • Bed sheet

3. Known in the past as passive restraint, is an invasive technique.

   • so that
     • Currently, it is seen by parents as one of the least favorable methods of patient management
   • However
     • Restraint still has a function in patient management and is part of the armamentarium of some pediatric dentists.

4. This is not a universal

   • So that
     • Restraining devices are not acceptable in dental practices under any circumstances.
       • However
         • Positive explanations may result in more parents’ acceptance of this form of treatment

5. Notes

   • Protective stabilization is mostly used in conjunction with conscious sedation
   • The use of restraint becomes more complicated when considering an older child, perhaps three to five year of age, who requires comprehensive restorative treatmen
   • The use of protective stabilization using a restraining device such as a Pediwrap or Papoose board was acceptable for use on the sedated child
