Chapter 11, Woot Woot!
Features of harmonic motion
- Type of motion in which an object moves along a repeating path
- Pendulum Motions
- Motion of the Earth as it orbits the sun
- Type of motion in which an object moves along a repeating path
Spring mass Oscillator and Simple Pendulum
- An object whose diameter is small compared to the length of the string and the string is massless, an object tied to a string makes up simple pendulum
- Total force is parallel to the arc and is responsible for harmonic motion
- the bottom point of the trajectory is the equilibrium position
- Gravity and tension in the string act on the object
- Position, Velocity, and Acceleration can be used to describe oscillatory motion
- Also needed is period and frequency
- An object whose diameter is small compared to the length of the string and the string is massless, an object tied to a string makes up simple pendulum
Harmonic motion and energy
- The Mechanical energy is the sum of the Kinetic and Potential energies
- For an ideal oscillator, the total mechanical energy is conserved
- The maximum kinetic energy must also equal the potential energy
Hooke's Law
- The force exerted by the spring
- F=-kx
