1. Bowed strings

   • Examples

   • How is the sound produced?
     • The sound is produced when the strings are rubbed with a bow. All of them have four strings and a very similar shape. They differ by their size and register.
   • Characteristics
     • A little bigger than the violin. Middle-pitch.
     • It is the smallest and the one with the highest pitch of the family.
     • The biggest one and with a very low register.
     • Bigger and with a lower register. The instrument is leaned on the floor with an endpin and played sitting down.

2. Plucked strings

   • How is the sound produced?
     • The sound is produced when the strings are plucked with the fingers or a plectrum.
   • Examples
     • Harp
     • Guitar
   • Characteristics
     • It has 47 strings arranged from short to long. All C strings are red, and all F strings are blue.
     • It has six strings and a neck with frets which indicate semitone distances on the strings.

3. struck instruments

   • How is the sound produced?
     • The sound is produced when the strings are struck or hit with a hammer triggered with a keyboard.
   • Examples
     • Piano
   • Characteristics
     • It has 88 keys which cover more than seven octaves. It is regarded as the king instrument of music because its wide register and its expressive possibilities.

4. How is the sound produced?

   • The sound is produced by the vibration of one or more tightened strings.
