1. chip and pin

   • uses a plastic card containing a chip
   • chip contains encrypted data
   • pin is entered by customer and compaered with stored
   • used to prove the customer is the correct owner odf the card
   • helps prevent fraud

2. optical mark recognition (OMR)

   • uses marks on forms
   • reads at high speed
   • problems
     • forms incorrectly completed
     • folded forms jam reader
     • needs special created forms which takes time
   • advantages
     • much faster than keyboard
     • cheap

3. bar code reader

   • uses
     • stock taking in stores
     • parcel tracking
     • luggage handling
   • advantages
     • can be read by portable reader
     • fast method of inputting data
     • very accurate
   • disadvantages
     • crumpled bar codes cannot be read
     • expensive equitment

4. magnetic strip card

   • used with credit/debit cards
   • data encrypted in strip
   • advantages
     • fast capture of card details
     • readers are comparatively cheap
   • disadvantages
     • easier to commit fraud
     • magnetic strip can be damaged
