Types of computers

1. Machine that can be programmed to manipulate symbols.

2. SUPERCOMPUTER AND MAINFRAME

   • One of the fastest computers available, are very expensive but they are employed for specialized applications that require immense amounts of mathetical calculations.

3. MINICOMPUTER

   • Midsize computer capable of supporting from up to 200 users simultaneously.

4. WORKSTATION

   • Used for engineering applications that require a moderate amount of computing power and high quality graphics capabilities
     • UNIX and Windos NT are the most common operating systems for workstations

5. PERSONAL COMPUTER TYPES

   • Small and inexpensive, designed for an individual user, the most popular use is for playing games and surfing the internet
   • TOWER MODEL
     • Power supply, motherboard and mass storage devices are stacked on top of each other in a cabinet.
   • DESKTOP MODEL
     • Designed to be very small and are limited to 3 internal mass storage devices
   • LAPTOP COMPUTER
     • Frequently called notebook computer, small and portable .
   • HAND-HELD COMPUTER
     • Really small keyboard, designed to provide personal information manager, also called palmtop and pocket computer
   • PDA
     • Personal digital assistant, combines telephone, fax, computing and network features.
