Direct Method

1. Characteristics

   • Correct pronunciation and grammar were emphasized.
     • Classroom instruction was conducted exclusively in the target language.
       • Only everyday vocabulary and sentences were taught.
         • Grammar was taught inductively.
           • New teaching points were introduced orally.

2. Weaknesses

   • It required teachers who were native speakers or who had nativelike fluency in the foreign language.
     • It was largely dependent on the teacher’s skill, rather than on a textbook,
       • not all teachers were proficient enough in the foreign language to adhere to the principles of the method.

3. Strengths

   • Makes learning very interesting, stablishing direct bond between a word and its meaning
     • facilitates students participation
       • students are able to understand what they are learning
         • Speech fluency, pronunciation and grammar structures are developed

4. Abilities that focus on

   • Oral communication is the goal
   • listening comprehention
   • grammar and punctuation
