Light and Space - For Summer Yr 8 Exams

1. Light travels at 300,000 Kilometers

2. The sun is 150 million km away

   • Takes 500 seconds or 8 minutes to get to Earth

3. Light travels in straight lines

4. Nothing can go faster than light

5. Transparent

   • Light passes through E.G Glass
   • Transmits the light through

6. We see objects because they reflect light from a light source into our eyes

7. Opaque

   • Light cannot go through it E.G Wood
   • Absorbs the light
   • Some Reflect the light E.G Mirrors
     • When you look into a mirror you see an almost perfect reflection
       • This is called seeing an image of yourself

8. Translucent

   • Lets a bit of light through but you cant so a clear image through it
     • E.G Thin Plastics and tracing paper
   • Scatters the light so when you look through it you can only see some of the light going through - Thus the 'clouded' image through it

9. Space

   • Sources of light
     • Stars (Mainly the Sun for us)
     • Objects that produce their own light are called luminous
     • Fires
     • Light bulbs
     • Bio-luminescent algae
     • Combustion
   • As planets and star are so far away we use telescopes to see them
     • Telescopes have lenses that are magnified, so when you look through its magnifiedso you can see stuff that are far away
   • The Seasons
     • As the Earth axis
   • The moon does not produce light, it reflects the sun light at Earth
   • The moon has phases as the moon orbits around the Earth and blocks the light at different points so we only see certain parts of the moon that have light
