Cloud Computing and Ubitiquous Computing Systems

  1. Key Terms

    • Cloud Computing
      • When a computer uses services provided by another organisation's computer systems
    • Servers
      • A computer hardware system
      • Acts as a host for other computers on the same network
    • Radio Frequency Identification
      • The use of wireless, non-contact system that uses radio waves to transfer information from a tag attached to an object or a person.
      • Mainly used for automatic identification and tracking
    • Cloud Storage
      • A computer's access, storage and retrieval facilities are hosted by another computer system.
  2. Cloud Computing and Storage

    • Cloud Computing is using computer services on other organisation's computers, which are known as hosts.
    • Examples are Amazon, Microsoft and Google
    • Cloud users can access data, storage and software on host's computers, which are at a remote locations
    • The users don't ever access the servers that the information is stored on.
    • Cloud storage is when only storage, access and retrieval facilities are available from the host provider.
    • Benefits
      • Cost and convenience - don't need to pay or use hardware
      • Availability - data and files available anywhere with internet
    • Concerns
      • Software - may not be fastest, latest or most secure version
      • Potentially lower perfomance - slower retrieval of data
      • Reliability of network
      • Security of data - no control over files being stored by the host. Security terms and policies must be read.
  3. Ubitiquous Computing Systems

    • Ubitiquous means 'existing everywhere', devices can be connected to the internet so data from the is available
    • RFID uses radio waves to transfer data to a tag on a person or object so they/it can be identified and tracked.
    • It is similar to bar codes on shopping items, but RFID doesn't need to be scanned.
    • And example is a cat flap that can only be opened by the correct collar.
    • There are computing systems in place that measure warehouse and shelf stock, when the stock reaches a minimum level, an order is placed with the appropriate supplier.
    • RFID can be used to see when objects leave the premises - by being stolen.
    • Futuristic example of ubitiquous computing include
      • A car that informs the owner it needs servicing, book itself into the garage and order spare parts.
      • A fridge that can monitor it's contents, compile a shopping list and add it to the owner's online shopping account.
    • Tills feed product sales to the central computer, which calculates the stock.
