Using a Modal approach to Blues improvisation
what progressions could i work with?
- What modes and scales would be relevant?
- what scale and modal options do i have when looking at individual chords?
- break down the progression's
- Approaching the full progression's
- for this i will look how to piece what i have learnt together and produce a series of recordings demonstrating my research
- Now I have looked at how to treat each chord and my possible options i will start by looking at pairs of chords and how to fit my melody to get a strong pull from one chord to another i am doing this to hopefully create a nice flow through my melody/ solo, this i why i previously said approaching each chord differently will change in context some approaches won't work aswell as others depending on the chords that sit behind the melody.
- Approaching the full progression's
- Here i will look at the individual chords and how i can approach them for example over a major chord i could use major pentatonic, mixolydian, ionian and lydian , over a minor chord i could use minor pentatonic, aeolian , dorian and phrygian. this will give me a good idea of how i can treat each chord but this will be affected when used in context of the progression.
- break down the progression's
- For this section i will be looking at what scales and modes i can use over my chosen progression's. For example over a major 12 bar blues when the chords consist of dominant 7 chord's my options could be minor and major pentatonic and also the mixolydian mode. i will be doing this just to initially weigh up my options and what approaches i could take and what i cant.
- what scale and modal options do i have when looking at individual chords?
- Here i will look at what chord progressions i will be working with and what will work well with my research for example standard 12 bar major and minor Blues progressions but also looking at more complex alternatives such and 6-2-5-1 turnarounds to give more verity and a mix of major, minor and diminished chords.
- What modes and scales would be relevant?
