   • Substitution - e.g. swap hardcopy map for digital map
   • Augmentation - e.g. automatically measure distance on the digital map
   • Modification - e.g. explore areas of maps with more data than traditional maps - travel time on routes, links to business contact details, etc.
   • Redefinition - e.g. take maps with you when you explore. GPS shows you where you are.

     • Get Satellite imagery of landscape

     • Plan fitness circuits, routes to jog and distances

4. Pros and Cons

   • Pros
     • Google maps is easy to use / intuitive
     • Has more utility than traditional paper maps
     • Efficient tool for exploring and linking to other information sources, such as websites
     • Encourages exploration
     • Can be used with desktop computers, laptops, tablet computers and smart phones
   • Cons
     • Limited utility in conjunction with handheld tools such as rulers
     • The classroom would need computers and internet for Google Maps to work
     • Students would need some computer literacy
