How seismometers work?
- 1). Seismometer readings
(seismograms) can be used to
work out the location of an
earthquake
- 2). P-waves travel faster
than S-waves
- 3). Using the time
difference between
the two waves, you
can calculate how far
way the earthquake
was.
- 4). Then you draw a circle on a map
with the location of your seismometer
at the centre
- 5). The edge of the cirlce shows all
the possbile places that the
earthquake could have happened
- Where all the cirlces cross,
that is where the earthquake
happened
