- 1997= New Labour
- Tony Blair priorities were: "education, education, education"
- Set up system where state schools could specialise
- CRITICISM- most populated by middle class students
- Introduced Sure Start Centres for child under 5
- CRITICISM- supposed to be high quality but had little increase in child development
- policy ultimately FAILED
- Academies opened and aimed at failing schools
- Machin & Vernoit 2010 study found that academies opened in the last 2 years
- had increased 3% of students earning 5 A*-C GCSE grades
- Education attainment zones set up in low income areas to increase academics
- CRITICISM- policy FAILED
- Also introduced Education maintenance allowance for low income families
- KEY CRITICISM (PAUL TROWLER 2003)- labour were unrealistic in trying to tackle social inequalities as TOO ingrained
- REJECTED old labour idea that "one school fits all'
- Conservative coalition 2010 education policy
- INCREASED academies (3,304) 15x more than 2010)
- Opened in MOST deprived areas
- Between 2010-2015 more then 400 free schools opened in England by Gov.
- Free school- non-profit making academy controlled by charity trust
- CRITICISM-drains other schools in local area
- ANOTHER CRITICISM- NO evidence benefit low-income families (worse off)
- EXtra funding for free school meal eligible pupils (pupil premium)
- CRITICISM- funds not necessarily spent on FSM pupils
- SCRAPPED EMA fund now based on bursaries
- CRITICISM- given DIRECTLY to schools + colleges
