Navigation Modes
Manual Transitions
- What is it?
- This is the transition mode in which the user can manually navigate arround the presentation in their own way/ at their own pace.
- When would you use it?
- During a presentation a member of the audienc may ask for clarification of a point of view, this form of navigation would allow the presenter to keep the active slide displayed or back track to aid in his discussion.
- In an information booth the user can go between slides as they please
- Advantages
- A user can spend as long as they like on a slide.
- The user can select which slides to view and in what order.
- The presenter can control the presentation while talking.
- The presenter can start, stop, halt or back track through the slides as he/she feels necessary
- Allows for audience participation/interaction.
- Methods users can use manual navigation
- Buttons on the slide
- Clicking on the slide to move to the next one
- Using a remote device to move forward/backwards between slides
- Disadvantages
- Time can be wasted spending toomuch time on one slide
- Important information may be skipped or gone over in little detail
- There may be not clear order as the presenter may jump arround the different topics if he/she is unprepared/unconfident
- What is it?
Automatic transition
- What is it?
- Slide movement which has a preset order and requires no user to manually move/switch between slides. Each slide timing is preset by the author as well as the order of slides.
- When would you use it?
- To show house sales or the interior of a housde in a realestate office
- In a doctors waiting room to show possible health issues, being safe, or other topical situations reguarding health care
- Advantages
- Can be left to show on a continueous loop
- Does not need anyone to advance on the presentation
- Timings are preset to each individual slide and run on a loop
- Disadvantages
- They are no good if human interaction is required
- A poor choice if you need to see the previous slide to make use of the current one
- Different people take longer/shorter to digest information so a fixed time may not be useful for some information.
- No good for non-linier presentations where the user can choose what they want to see next
- If a presenter is present they may not have enough time to expand/ explain on a point
- Does not allow for time to ask questions
- Slides may move too quickly or slowly
- If you miss a slide you have to wait for it to come round again
- It does not allow for audience participation as the slides move along without allowing the user to manupulate/ use/ read off the slide
