Geography: Coastal Landforms Caused by Deposition
- Deposition forms Beaches
- Beaches are found on caosts between the high and low water mark
(Highest and lowest point on the land the sea level gets to)
- They're formed by constructive waves depositing things like sand and shingle
- Sand and Shingle beaches have different Charateristics
- Sand beaches are flat and wide - Sand particles are small and the weak backwash
can move them back down the beach - Creating a long, gentle slope
- Shingle beaches are steep and narrow - Shingle particles are large and the weak
backwash can't move them back down the beach. The shingle particles build up
and create a steep slope
- LSD Forms Spits and Bars
- Spits
- They form at sharp bends in a coastline
- LSD Transports sand and shingle past the bend and deposits into the sea
- Strong Winds and waves may cause the spit to curve at the end
- The sheltered area behind the spit is protected from waves - Plants can grow here
- Over time, that area can became a salt marsh or mud flat
- Bars
- A Bar is formed when a spit joins two headlands together
- The bar cuts off the bay between the two headlands
- This means a lagoon can form behind the bar
