Mass Movement

Mass Movement

1. Human interference

   • Deforestation
     • Trees
       • Bind the soil
     • Soil becomes saturated
   • Mining and Quarrying
     • Trigger Mass Movement
       • Landslides
       • Rockslides
   • Excavation
     • Construction of roads
       • Derrybrien
   • Agriculture
     • Overgrazing
       • Less Vegetation
       • Soil eroded
     • Overstocking land
       • Poor Land
     • Sahel

2. Types of Movement

   • Fast
     • Rock Fall
     • Mudflow
   • Moderate
     • Earthflow
     • Slumping
   • Slow
     • Soil Creep
       • Features
         • Teracettes
         • Fallen Fence Posts
         • Broken or fallen walls

3. Factors affecting Movement

   • Slope
     • Steep
       • Rapid
     • Gentle slope
       • Slow
   • Water Content
     • More water
       • More likely to move
     • Less water
       • Wont Move
   • Slope Material
     • Rock(hard materials)
       • Less Likely to move
     • Mud(Loose Materials)
       • More Likely to move
   • Vegetation
     • Helps hold Soil Together
     • Reduces the chance of mass movement
   • Human Activity
     • Digging of road foundations
     • Removal of trees
       • Comercial companys
   • Natural DIsaster
     • Lahar/mudflows occur
       • Volcanic eruptions
   • Tectonic Activity
     • VIbrations cause
       • Soil to become loose
