1. Ch 18- Conclusion

   • "Every man is the lord of a realm beside which the earthly empire."
     • Thoreau could be trying to say that people are to earthly and do not think beyond to a more divine figure and state of life.
   • Thoreau says having self respect is more important than being patriotic.
   • People who go to war are defeated and are deserters.
     • It makes sense that Thoreau would have this opinion because he is a Transcendentalist and he does not support war.
   • Thoreua says he left the woods because he "has many more lives to live."
     • He might want to go and explore different paths in life.
   • Thoreau says that if you are confident in a dream and have the passion to make that dream a reality, you will find success.
     • This is a very relevant idea even in today's day and age.
   • Thoreau says that everyone should mind his own business and follow his own path in life.
     • This follows the idea of self-reliance and confidence.
   • People do not want to live in a fake reality, they want the truth.
     • This can be gained through the expression of free-thought.
     • "An truth is better than make-believe."
   • "Time is an ingredient in imperfect work...it shall be perfect in all respects."
     • Time takes away from perfection but perfection does not take away from time.
   • Enjoy your life no matter the situation or state of it.
   • "Money is not required to but one necessary of the soul.
     • Money is used to buy earthly things, but not divine things.
   • Things do not change, humans change.
   • "The hospitality was as cold as ices."
     • This is a simile.
   • One time, Thoreau went to a fancy party with expensive things all around, but there was no truth.
     • He went home hungry for that truth.
