Statistics and Probability
Transfer Goal
- Students will be able to independently use their learning to understand the importance of and be able to differentiate between both theoretical and experimental probability and independent and dependent events. The students will solve real-world probability problems using data from tables and diagrams.
- Enduring Understandings
- Experimental results tend to approach theoretical probabilities after a large number of trials.
- The message conveyed by data depends upon how the data is collected, represented and summarized
- The results of a statistical investigation can be used to support or refute an argument
- That probability is a number between 0 and 1
- Relative frequency is the observed number of successful events for a finite sample of trials
- The probability of a compound event is a fraction
- Essential Questions
- How probable is "probably"?
- How can experimental and theoretical probabilities be used to make predictions or draw conclusions?
- Describe a real-world situation where a thorough understanding of both experimental and theoretical probabilities would be advantageous?
- How can the collection, organization, interpretation and display of data be used to answer questions?
- Why is it essential to understand whether an event is dependent or independent when calculating probabilities?
- How are statistics and probability used to draw inferences about the real world?
- Knowledge: Students will know:
- That a sample can be used to make generalizations about populations.
- Which central tendency is appropriate for a given situation.
- Which central tendency is appropriate for a given situation.
