1. metals

   • good conductor of heat
   • shiny
   • solids
     • high melting points
   • left hand side of periodic table
   • sometimes magnetic
     • iron, cobalt, nickel
   • form basic oxides
   • are rigid when thick and bendy when thin
   • can be hammered in

2. non-metals

   • poor conductors of heat and electricity
   • they are a dull colour
   • mostly solids our gases
   • never magnetic
   • form acidic oxides
   • are brittle
   • cannot be hammered into shape
     • solid ones will break
