THE BREAST

1. Histology

   • Formed by
     • Glandular tissue, ducts, stroma of fibrous and adipose tissue which hold the lobes together.
       • The lobules are formed from the union of 12 to 20 lobes
       • Each lobe has several lactiferous ducts that join a main duct

2. Anatomy

   • External
     • Nipple, areola and skin
       • Internal
         • Structure of the mammary gland

3. Embryology

   • In the 5 and 6 weeks of gestation the mammary ridges are formed.
     • In neonates (both sexes) it is made up of epithelial ducts surrounded by connective tissue.
