Network Security Threats

  1. Brute Force Attack

    • Use a strong password that includes 8 characters, uppercase, lowercase, numbers and symbols.
      • To stop prevent this, you can use strong passwords, locking accounts, and a 2 step verification.
    • When all possible password combinations are systematically tried, with the hope of getting it right to gain unauthorised access to the computer system
  2. Virus

    • Viruses insert themselves in normal programs. They replicate themselves and transfer from one computer to another.
      • They are activated by a user often as email attachments and attachment to other files and programs.
    • Avoid opening spam emails, files, attachments from people that you don't know and untrusted websites.
  3. Phising

    • Phising is normally an email or text messaging scam where victims are tricked into believing that they are being contacted by an authentic organisation, like a bank or popular website.
    • Check the email of the contacter before you send any personal information, to make sure it isn't a scam.
  4. Social Engineering

    • Used to manipulate people to gain unauthorised access into confidential and personal information.
    • Don't fall for it and always check if you know the person/email.
  5. Passive attacks

    • To detect and prevent a passive attack, you can use encryption, network forensics and penetration testing.
      • Penetration Testing
        • Penetration testing is used to identify possible weaknesses in a network’s security by trying to exploit them.
  6. Denial-of-Service Attack (DoS) and Distributed Denial-of-Service Attack (DDoS)

    • You can prevent these by using a firewall to control which programs can send and receive data packets, so that only authorised users & trusted programs can access the network.
