Phonetics and Phonology
Definition Phonetics
- Phonetics is a scientific description of speech sounds exist in a language. The phonetics describes the ways in which sounds are produced and the points in that are articulated.
- Articulatory Features
- Phonetics deals with the production of sound and tries to provide the set of characteristics that can describe the sounds of a language.
- Example
- The sound /l/. /l/ is a lateral sound released after a partial obstruction between the tongue plate and the alveolar. This sound can be velarized before the velar sounds and when it occurs in the final position of words. He goes deaf when he follows deaf sounds.
- Example
- Phonetics provides the raw for the description of the production of speech sounds.
- Example
- The sound /t/. /t/ is phonetically described as a pulmonic egressive voiceless alveolar plosive.
- Example
- Phonetics describes the production process involved in physical sounds,
- Example
- What we are saying in the long run is that the voiceless alveolar stop /t/ does not changes its phonetic characteristics, but can have additional features under the phonological influence of its position of occurrence. The same goes for the lateral alveolar /l/.

Definition Phonology
- Phonology describes environmental factors, that shape physical sounds in particular occurrence points. It looks at and tries to establish a system of sound distinctions relevant to a particular language.
- Suprasegmental Features
- phonologically, /t/ can be performed with suction starting position of a stressed syllable; that is, when /t/ comes before other sounds in a settled syllable. Can be performed when lateralized when immediately followed by the lateral /l/.
- Thus, we see the phoneme /t/ realised phonologically as:

- Example
- Phonology actually delineates the functioning of sounds in particular contexts. Thus, /l/ can be realised phonologically in different positions as.

Difference between phonetics and Phonology.
- The phonetics describes the physical realisation of sounds. It studies the physiological processes involved in sound production. Phonology on the other hand looks at the behavioural patterns of sounds in actual speech, their realisations in different environments, whatsoever these may be.
