Internal forces

1. Normal forces or axial force

   • perpendicular to the section; from normal stress distribution
     • responsible for changing volume and causing compression and tension

2. Shear forces

   • acting along the surface; from shear stress distribution
     • responsible for changing shape of the object and causing deformation

3. Bending moment

   • is the reaction induced in a structural element when an external force or moment is applied to the element causing the element to bend.
     • responsible for bending the object

4. 3. How many internal forces do we have in structural members and what are they? For what type of deformation each one of them would be responsible? You can make some drawings to illustrate your answers.
