- Ensure datagram has not been altered
Does not always include all of the IP header
- Some elements of the IP header are dynamically set en-route therefore can not be included in the MAC calculation
Is used of all predictable fields
If a packet changes hop by hop then you cant MAC the packet as the contents will change
