Introducing Forces

1. Force diagram

   • uses labelled arrows
     • direction of the arrow
       • shows the direction of the force
     • length of the arrow
       • is proportional to the magnitude of the force

2. Resultant of forces

   • sum effect of more than one force
     • forces in the same direction adds
     • forces in opposite direction substracts
   • if resultant force is not zero
     • object will be rotating around an axis
     • object will be accelerating

3. Balanced and unbalanced forces

   • pair of forces equal in magnitude & opposite in direction
     • force and its reaction
       • When one object exerts a force on another object, then the second object exerts an equal and opposite reaction force on the first.
     • equilibrium
       • all forces acting on an object are balanced
       • an object at equilibrium will be
         • moving at constant speed along a straight line
         • at rest

4. Turning effect of a force

   • formula for claculation
   • changing moment
     • change magnitude of the force
     • change distance from the pivot
