American foreign policy in the 1970 and early 1980s

1. Detente was there main foreign policy at the end of the Vietnam war

   • The cease fire was agred in 1973
     • Only after Russia had lunched an attack on the south n 1972 to did the two super powers relise there was no winner to the Vietnam war.
     • Soon after the americans began to take there troops home
       • However this did not win the war mearly take America out of it
         • This meant that in April the 25 1975 when the north Vietnamese people lunched an attack on the South the south could not resist it whithout America.
           • ethese are the things which made America look for a new Foreign policy this had been a waste of time, life and energy this is when Nixon decided that detente was the best sollution.
   • policy was continued even after Nixon fell from office after Watergate in 1974

2. As a result of detente this lead Nixon to to visit and make peace with China this was shoking as the Americans resented China for the best part of 3 years

   • This lead to much better relations between the two other countries.
     • Also lead to good relations beetween America and Russia

3. Arms Control was manly limiting IBCM

   • Nixon said that America was focused on sufficiency now
     • This meant that the American Goverment only whanted to be able to themselfs
   • This happend in the Salt 1 talks in Helsinki on the date of 19735

4. The salt 2 agrements stated more cuts on weapons however the American congress rejected this as Russia had invaded Afganistan 1979

   • A new President was called in who took a hard line approche to the communists
     • Starting a new Arms Race called star wars
       • Ronald Reagen also gave a speach calling Russsia the Evil Empire
       • The American scientists were told to see if there was a way of being able to shoot down Russian missiles from space
       • Called the seacound cold war
     • To show this America boycotted the Olymic games
