1. DEFINITION - A rootkit is a clandestine computer program designed to provide continued privileged access to a computer while actively hiding its presence.

     • GREEK WIRETAPPING – in 2004/05
     • ZEUS, first identified in July 2007, is a Trojan horse that steals banking information
     • STUXNET - the first known rootkit for industrial control systems
     • 1. FLAME - a computer malware discovered in 2012

2. PURPOSE - A rootkit's purpose is to hide itself and other software from view. This is done to prevent a user from identifying and potentially removing an attacker's software.
