  1. Body And Mind
    1. Christians are strongly against taking illegal drugs and the misuse of prescription drugs because of the damage they do to the body and mind that god created. Christians compare the mind and body to a temple created by God, and the destruction of this is an attack on God's authority.
      1. "Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's spirit lives in you? If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him".
        1. Muslim Teaching: "Make not your own hands contribute to your destruction"
    2. RELIGIOUS ATTITUDES TO DRUG ABUSE
      1. Key Words
        1. Social Drugs:- Legal drugs such as alcohol, nicotine and caffeine.
          1. Recreational drugs: Drugs taken for the buzz they give.
          2. What is a drug?
            1. A drug is a substance that can be natural or manufactured in a laboratory, which if introduced the body has an effect on the way the mind and body work.
          3. RELIGIOUS ATTITUDES TO THE RICH AND POOR

              1. Poverty Trap:- Not being able to break out of poverty.
                1. Dependency:- Being dependent on benefits or others to survive

                                  1. The third pillar of Islam is Zakah. This ensures all Muslims give 2.5% of their disposable income to the poor every year.
                              2. RELIGIOUS ATTITUDES TO THE ELDERLY AND DEATH

                                  1. Hindu
                                    1. Hindus believe it is their religious duty to care for the elderly (Dharma)
                                      1. "let your mother be a god to you. Let your father be a god to you".
                                      2. Christian
                                        1. Christians believe they should honour their parents in thought, word and deed. It is a Christian duty.
                                          1. "Honour your father and your mother"- 5th commandment
                                        2. Who Should Care For The Elderly?
                                          1. Living At Home
                                            1. Many elderly people are strongly independent and prefer to live at home with support. Social services could provide a home help, meals on wheels, alert system so that help could be provided if needed.
                                            2. Living With Family
                                              1. Many families prefer to have their elderly relatives living with them in their own home. Some religious teachings encourage this out of gratitude and respect.
                                          2. RELIGIOUS ATTITUDES TO CRIME AND PUNISHMENT

                                              1. Repentance:- Being truly sorry and changing your behaviour.
                                                1. Young Offender:- A person under 18 who breaks the law.
                                                  1. Vindication:- Offenders are punished to show the law must be respected.
                                                  2. Causes Of Crime
                                                    1. Environmental Reasons
                                                      1. Poor and deprived areas cause people to commit crime
                                                        1. High Unemployment
                                                          1. Inadequate Housing
                                                            1. Overcrowding
                                                            2. Psychological Reasons
                                                              1. Human nature e.g. Greed, agression

                                                                  1. Kleptomania

                                                                    1. Judgement impaired by drugs and alcohol

                                                                            2. Types Of Crime
                                                                              1. Crime against a person:- Cause direct harm to a person or group e.g. Murder, rape, violent abuse
                                                                                1. Crime against property:- Damage or deprive people of their property e.g. burglary, shoplifting, vandalism.
                                                                                  1. Crime against the state:- Potentially endanger everyone or disrupt society e.g. Terrorism, spying or fraud.
                                                                                    1. Crimes against religion:- aka religious offences or sins. These aren't crime but break laws of religion e.g. Blasphemy and sacrilege.
                                                                                    2. Christianity
                                                                                      1. "If yoyr brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him".
                                                                                        1. Christians don't support the idea of retribution, but do support other aims of punishment.
                                                                                          1. They believe laws need to be upheld (vindication).
                                                                                            1. For Christians, the most important aim of punishment is to reform criminals into law abiding citizens
                                                                                              1. They believe criminals should repent and receive punishment and forgiveness.
                                                                                              2. Islam
                                                                                                1. "As to the thief, male or female, cut off their hands; punishment by way of example".
                                                                                                  1. Muslims believe that punishments should deter people from breaking the law.
                                                                                                    1. This is often achieved by public humiliation e.g. Flogging.
                                                                                                      1. The aim is to ensure that the law is respected and to give victims satisfaction.

                                                                                                        1. Global Interdependence:- Where countries are dependant on each other for trade and survival.
                                                                                                          1. Emergency Aid:- Immediate assistance to deal with the aftermath of a disater

                                                                                                                                1. Islam teaches that wealth is given by Allah for the good of all humanity and must be shared.
