     • an Austrian country dance originally
       • music in 3/4 and had hopping steps.
         • by late 18t century, hops were replaced by slides and the Waltz became a fashionable urban dance
           • It differed from other dances with its turning steps and the couples circling on a dance floor
           • The closed hold made the dance seem more daring as it meant there was close contact
           • the couple bow and curtseyed before dancing
     • Would have been danced by men and women in public and private ballrooms by the upper and middle class
