Spelling Rules for Adding ed

1. 1. A verb ends in -e, simply add the letter d.

   • love - loved
   • like - liked
   • smile - smiled

2. 2. A verb ends in a consonant followed by y, change the y to i and add -ed.

   • marry - married
   • study - studied
   • cry - cried

3. 3. A verb ends in a vowel followed by y, simply add -ed with no changes.

   • play - played
   • stay - stayed
   • enjoy - enjoyed

4. 4. A One-syllable word ends in consonant-vowel-consonant (except x), double the last letter and add -ed. (Note: Never double final x.)

   • stop - stopped
   • jog - jogged
   • plan - planned

5. 5. A word (including words end in x), simply add -ed with no changes.

   • wish - wished
   • visit - visited
   • open - opened

6. 6. Irregular verbs.

   • eat - ate
   • drink - drank
   • come - came
