Reference Type
The different type of sources of data (e.g. books, journal articles, technical reports etc.) are referred to as REFERENCE TYPES in EndNote.
The reference type of a particular reference controls which data fields appear in the:
reference window;
style / connection / filter files
For a given reference, the reference type is typically selected by the user when the reference is initially added to the library and is best done prior to any data being inputted. If no reference type is assigned, he default reference type is used - as determined in the EndNote settings (Edit -> Preferences -> Reference Types -> Default Reference Type [select from list] ).

The List of Reference Types
The list of reference types available in EndNote contains:
A generic reference type
Uneditable
Guide for other reference types (especially when customising)
Forms for 54 commonly used reference types (e.g. Journal Article)
3x Un-used reference types - for the user to create their own

Fields for a reference
Each reference can include up to 52 data fields (type + 51)
The fields available for a particular reference type are determined in the REFERENCE TYPE TABLE and, with the exception of the generic reference type, can be modified. (Edit -> Preferences -> Reference Types -> Modify Reference Types)
N.B. This interface is only available if the style, filter and reference windows are closed and should not be used for specific data.
When modifying reference types, changes affect all libraries opened by the current user of the desktop. When the library is opened on a different computer, the layout of the references will follow the preferences set by the current user of the desktop - unless the reference type table is also exported.
EndNote Online is never affected - it always uses the default reference types.
All 52 fields are available to all reference types. EndNote default, however, only the generic reference type includes every field.
Some fields are reserved for particular functions:
Author fields
- are specifically configured to handle author names (and should thus only be used for names!)
- use a comma when entering corporate names: e.g. Acme Corporation,
- when a bibliography is created:
the Author List settings are used for the author field,
the Editor List settings are used for the Secondary, Tertiary and Subsidiary Author fields.
- the field names change with context for different reference types
Title fields
- the 3 Title fields found in the generic reference type change heading in other reference types as per the context. e.g. Generic reference type: Title; Secondary Title; Tertiary Title
Book section reference type: Chapter Title; Book Title; Series Title
