Judging
Art
Your task is to
judge each of the ‘artworks’ in the document Judging Art (posted on Inertial
Gumption).
1. You need to decide which piece is your
favorite and why.
A:
The Beach painting. It’s a nice
painting with nice shades of colours, it has got a nice melancholy feel to it
and provokes an emotion within the observer.
2. Which piece is your least favorite and why.
A:
Jackson Polloc. No.1. I do not enjoy looking at it in any particular way.
Doesn’t provoke any special emotion and I cannot appreciate that specific work.
3. Which was created by the most talented artist
and why.
A: Salvador Dahli, metamorphosis of Narcissus.
It is a surreal painting which seem to have required a lot of imagination, the
use of colours and shading brings it to a new level in comparison to the
others.
4. Which was created by the least talented artist
and why.
A:
Jackson Polloc. No.1. It seems as if the artist lacked imagination and randomly
spread colours on a sheet.,
5. Are there any pieces that you would not
consider to be art at all?
Why?
A: Yes, art is a complicated concept however I
interpret art as something beautiful, imaginative, creative created by others
or one self. I do not agree that someone can themselves determine whether their
work is art or not. They reserve the right to call it work but not art. Art is
to be determined by observers and is an individualistic opinion, what is art in
someone’s eyes may not be art in others. Thus in my eyes Jackson Polloc. No.1.
is not art, as it is not beautiful imaginative or creative, nor does it provoke
any emotion.
6. Are there cultural differences in any of the
pieces?
A: none that are blunt obvious, I do not know
the origin of the artists thus it is difficult. Perhaps Chinese Painting as the houses are painted a bit differently.
7. Which piece provoked the biggest emotional
response in you? Do you know why?
Salvador Dahli’s metamorphosis painting
because of its surreal image, really provokes the observer and makes it difficult
to interpret.
8. After studying these pieces can you find a
universal standard in art?
As
aforementioned it is determined by the observer and not the creator. It should
in my opinion be something imaginative, creative, beautiful (beauty can be
interpreted differently) and should provoke some sort of emotion within the
observer. Whether it is amaze, envy, despise or horror. Art can be simplistic
or very complicated but some of the previously mentioned criteria should in my
opinion be fulfilled before I will call it ‘Art’.
