How Film Developed

Video Talents and Jobs

Film

Television

Video Today

Film Equipment is relatively portable, so location filming is practical

Film's ability to reproduce quality images in black in white or color is highly refined

Film picture and sound tracks are usually recorded separately (picture on film, sound on tape or digital storage), so sophisticated editing is possible.

Properly archived (stored permanently) film can last a century or longer

The Equipment was heavy, complex, and tied down by cables to its control systems

TV's image quality was markedly lower than that of film, and it's ability to render shades of gray from black to white was limited. Before 1950, color television was not broadcast in North America.

Television could not be recorded for later editing, exept by copying a TV screen display of it to film and then treating it as if it were a filmed program. These "kinescope" films degraded picture quality even further

Film continues to evolve, the gap has widened that electronic production technology known as just "Television" has been simplified to "Video."

We have seen new technologies and techniques come to light such as movies being automatically being converted to HD film (Digital Intermediate) , color management, and special effects.
