1. non-volatile

   • When the computer is turned off the data will be saved

2. optical

   • Advantages
     • good for archiving
     • transportable
     • durable
   • Disadvantages
     • requires special drives to read and write
     • doesn't store a lot of data compared to the others
   • Examples
     • CD
     • DVD

3. magnetic

   • Advantages
     • quick to access data
     • some are cheap e.g. floppy disk
     • store a large amount of data
   • Disadvantages
     • data can be altered by magnetic fields

4. Solid sate drive(SSD)

   • Advantages
     • No moving parts
     • transfer speeds are faster
     • runs at the same speed no matter how much data is being accessed
     • long life span
   • Disadvantages
     • expensive
     • slow random write speeds
   • Examples
     • memory stick
     • memory card
     • phone
