• Tragedy
• The play is a tragedy. The genre ‘tragedy’ originates from the Greek
• Philosopher Aristotle in his book Poetics.
• He classified a tragedy as a story
• which:
• Has a main
• character, the tragic hero.
• The tragic
• hero is not evil but has a fatal flaw.
• The hero
• has to suffer, learn of his fatal flaw (catharsis) and, usually, die.
• There is a
• sense of fate (things had to happen this way)
• The
• audience often feel pity for the tragic hero (pathos)
• There is a chorus
• which informs the audience what is happening and how they should be feeling.
• In AVFTB Eddie is our tragic hero and Alfieri is
• the chorus, the character who comments and explains the action of the play.
