  1. 1How do Buddhists understand Anatta?
    1. AAnatta is a transcendent state in which there is neither suffering, desire, nor sense of self, and the subject is released from the effects of karma and the cycle of death and rebirth. It represents the final goal of Buddhism.
    2. BAnatta refers to the notion of "not-self" or the illusion of "self". In the early texts, the Buddha commonly uses the word in the context of teaching that all things perceived by the senses (including the mental sense) are not really "I" or "mine", and for this reason one should not cling to them.
    3. CAnatta or impermanence is understood by Buddhists as one of the three marks of existence. According to the impermanence doctrine, human life embodies this flux in the aging process, the cycle of birth and rebirth (samsara), and in any experience of loss. This is applicable to all beings and their environs including devas (mortal gods). The Buddha taught that because conditioned phenomena are impermanent, attachment to them becomes the cause for future suffering (dukkha).
    4. DThe principle of Anatta is one of the most important concepts in the Buddhist tradition. The Buddha is reputed to have said: "I have taught one thing and one thing only, Anatta and the cessation of Anatta." The classic formulation of these teachings on Anatta is the doctrine of the Four Noble Truths, in which the Truth of Anatta is identified as the first of the four truths.
Anatta is commonly explained according to three different categories:
The obvious physical and mental suffering associated with birth, growing old, illness and dying.
The anxiety or stress of trying to hold onto things that are constantly changing.
A basic unsatisfactoriness pervading all forms of existence, because all forms of life are changing, impermanent and without any inner core or substance.
The Buddhist tradition emphasizes the importance of developing insight into the nature of Anatta, the conditions that cause it, and how it can be overcome. This process is formulated in the teachings on the Four Noble Truths.
