Causes of Japanese Expansion The last shogun was Tokugawa Yoshinobu Opposition from amongst the Satsuma, Choshu and Tosa samurai clans.
They raised forces to oppose under the slogan: "Sonno -joi" (revere the emperor, expel the barbarian). Tosa clan suggested that Yoshinobu should resign as a shogun, and instead, head a new national council made up leading daimyo
The Boshin War broke out in 1867, as the Satsuma and Chosu were opposed to the Tosa suggestion that Yoshinobu become the head of any new governing council.
Japan and the USA. On July 1853, Commodore Perry arrived with four warships, to request comercial agreements, and "promising" to return the following year to know Japan's response.
Japan finally agreed to to the Teatry of Kanagawa in March 1854. Which opened up two of Japan's ports to US trade, and granted the US the position of "most favoured nation" Japan's policy of seclusion that lasted for over 200 years, was finally ended.
Rapid emergence of Japan as an important regional and even international power. US followed up the 1854 with other treaties further opening up Japan to US trade.
In 1858, Japan's goverment signed the Treaty of Amity and commerce with the US. This was oppesed by the imperial court who favoured continuing seclusion.
Meji Restoration, 1868. Treaties were all signed without the emperor's consent.
"Shishi" (men high purpose) Main advocates of resistance, prepared to kill and die for their cause.
Main inspirations: Thinkers such as Aizawa Seishisai and Sakuma Zozan.
"Eastern morals and western technology" Shishi Leader, Yoshida Shoin, a member of the Choshu clan, wanted the old feudal system.
He argued that the goverment was incapable of expelling the Western barbarians. This plot led to his execution in 1859.
