What is this and how would you use it? Diatomaceous Earth: sprinkled around and onto plants that are prone to insect damage. It gets into the insects joints and slowly dries out the insects outer body. It is meant to be especially useful for the control of aphids. It needs to be applied weekly and is a preventative measure.
Why are ladybirds useful for the garden? Their larvae eat aphids.
How does this work? Garlic and mint repel many insects.
What is the name of this plant and how could you use it in pest prevention? Allium Alliums belong to the onion family. Planting alliums, onions or garlic among other plants will repel insect pests.
How would you use beer in pest prevention? Beer traps can be used to attract slugs and snails. They will drown in the beer.
How would you use this and what is it meant to prevent? Slugs and snails are meant to avoid copper. So copper can be used to line the outside of a plant pot or planting area to prevent slugs or snails from crossing this boundary.
How does this work? Similar to beer traps, slugs and snails are attracted by citrus fruit, but the acidity harms their slime layer and so kills them.
Why should gardeners encourage frogs into their garden? Frogs eat many harmful insects and their larvae, but they are especially partial to slugs and snails.
How would this used? Sprinkling hard, spiky and sharp material around plants might prevent slug damage, as slugs and snails do not like to cross these surfaces.
Which insects should you report to the RHS? Insects that are not native to the UK, like the lily beetle or the rosemary beetle, should be reported to the RHS, as their spread within the UK is being mapped and studied.
