  1. 1half life•Remove other sources of radiation
    •Read counter after 30mins
•Subtract background radiation from activity measured on counter
•An organic ethanoate is shaken with the radioactive source and they are separated into layers
•The beta activity is observed using gigger muller tube and ratemeter, counter is checked every 10 secs
•Subtract the background rate from the final reading
•Plug into activity or half-life formula
•Plot graph ln A against time
    half life
  2. 2rutherford atomic strucutre•Shoot alpha particles in the vacuum
•Particles will be incident on the gold foil (it is perpendicular to direction of motion)
•The collisions are detected by flashes of light(centillations) when they hit a glass screen coated with zinc sulphide
•This is carried out in a vacuum to avoid collisions with any dirt or air particels
    rutherford atomic strucutre
  3. 3pendulum paper conesjust remember diagram and what it impliespendulum paper cones
  4. 4spring and light gate•Same as other experiment just displace mass by 5 cm
•10 oscillations are needed and average is taken
•Carry out experiment for different masses varying in incraments of 100g
•Plot graph of period against mass
    spring and light gate
  5. 5split corck•Pendulum bob is displaced from its equilibrium position(ensuring the angle between the thread and vertical is less than 10 degrees)
•When released it will oscillate in harmonic motion
•The periodic time A to O to B and back to A depends on the length if the wire and acceleration in free fall
•Length of pendulum is measured below suspension point to center of pendulum bob
•To find period 10 oscilations must be completed (this can be measured using a light gate)
•Carry out experiment for different lengths of wire and plot graph of period against length
    split corck
  6. 6heat capcity liquid•Measure mass of water and calorimeter respectively
    •Measure initial temperature
•Turn on heater and start stopwatch
•Record voltage and current then power and energy
•Stir liquid thoroughly to establish equilibrium
•Wait 300 seconds then turn off heater
    •Record final temperature
    •Find temperature rise
•Find heat gained by container (calorimeter)
•Subtract calorimeter heat from heat supplied to water
    •Plug values into formula
    heat capcity liquid
  7. 7heat capacity metal block•Mass of metal is measured
    •Initial temp is recorded
•Power of heater is calculated after it is switched on using the ammeter and voltmeter (power = current x voltage)
•Stopwatch is used to measure time
    •Energy supply calculated (e= I x V x T)
•Keep reading temp after heater is switched off to establish equilibrium
•Final temp is taken (highest temp reached by metal after heater is turned off)
    •Apply results measured into formula
    heat capacity metal block
  8. 8pressure law•for a fixed mass of gas at constant volume the pressure is directly proportional to the temperature
    •p/t= constant
•water stirred to ensure trapped air and water at equilibrium temperature
    • temperature is increased by 10centigrade
    •repeated till water boils
•graph is plotted pressure against temp
    pressure law
  9. 9charles law•For a fixed mass of gas at constant pressure, the volume and temperature are directly proportional
    •v/t = constant
•volume of trapped air and temp are recorded
•water is heated until it is 10centigrade hotter than starting temp
•process is repeated increasing the temp by 10 until it boils
•a graph is plotted of volume against temp
    charles law
  10. 10boyles law•for a fixed mass of gas at constant temperature, the volume and pressure are inversely proportional
    •p=1/v
    •increase pressure using hand pump
•record volume of gas and pressure
•repeat for a number of values
    boyles law
  11. 11hoookes law•Using a micrometer measure the diameter of the wire on multiple places of the wire
•The wire is then loaded with about 5 N to keep the wire taught
•The test wire is loaded in steps of 10N up to 100N
•The extension is measured for each load added
•Stress and strain is calculated for each load
•This is plugged in to the young modulus formula making a stress against strain graph
    hoookes law
