- 1What is an Avalanche?A sudden downhill movement of snow and ice, that can be triggered by a small movement. Usually in mountainous areas.
- 2What is a slab avalanche?A thick layer of snow that has not stuck to the layer below, and it can move for itself. Caused by subtle movements.
- 3What is a powder avalanche?Loose snow that begins at a single point, and expands as it goes downhill.
- 4What are the possible ways people can die in an avalanche?Suffocation, trauma, shock and hypothermia.
- 5What is an ice mask?Created when the victim's breath melts the snow, and then it freezes again.
- 6What is an Ava-lung?A device that draws in air from the snow pack. The Ava-Lung membrane increases the surface area from which you breathe, making it possible to pull this air from the snow. You breathe in and out through the tube.
- 7What causes an avalanche?Tree removal, which breaks up an avalanche; skiing off-piste; temperature change and storms.
