Question Answer
How do we form questions? In the following, let's see whether you knew the answer ...
There is basically two types of questions ...?! a) Yes-No-questions (ASMs) b) Question-word-questions (QUASMs)
The first set of questions asks for ...: a decision: Yes No
The second group of questions ...: asks for further information, e.g.: doer/actor victim reason place time/ duration
How many verbs does almost every question have? one two three more than three the answer is TWO: auxiliary verb and main verb
What is the function of the auxiliary verb? The auxiliary verb indicates person (I, you, he/she/ it, we, ...) tense (present, past, future, ...) the active/passive mode (change of meaning of main verb)
What does the following auxiliary verb indicate? was (explaining) was = I/He/She/It, Singular, Past Tense, Active
What does the auxiliary verb indicate? have been (playing) have been = I/You/We/They, Present Perfect, Active
What does this auxiliary verb indicate? can (read) can = Present Tense, Active, Mode: "am/is/are able to" (it is a MODAL VERB)
What does the following main verb express? (was) explaining exlaining = this verb tells us about the meaning of the action
What does this main verb express? (has been) playing playing = tells us about the action
What about this main verb? (can) read read = the action
What does the expression ASM stand for? ASM = A uxiliary S ubject M ain verb
Now, what does the expression QUASM mean? QUASM = QU estion word A uxiliary verb S ubject M ain verb
Well, how can ASM help us to form questions? ASM tells us that the question starts with an auxiliary verb, followed by the subject and the main verb: Are they going (home)? Has she done (her homework)? Will Mr Woodrow leave (tomorrow)? May I go (to the bathroom)?
And HOW can QUASM help us??? QUASM shows us: the question starts with a question word, followed by the auxiliary verb, the subject and the main verb: Who did your mum call? Where has your dog gone? How often have you missed the bus?
Of course, like always, there are EXCEPTIONS to these rules, but still: memorizing the rules might help learners a great deal ...! Exceptions are: # the full verb "to be": Are you frightened? (= only ONE verb!) # the question word "Who" meaning "Wer": Who watches a lot of documentaries? (no auxiliary verb, no subject because WHO is the SUBJECT!!!
this was a lot of theory, why not practise some questions now?! go to PADLET
