| When does compression and rarefaction occur? | Compression occurs when molecules collide increasing the pressure within a particular area in an elastic medium. Rarefaction occurs when there is a decrease in pressure at a particular point within an elastic medium. |
| How is the sound transmitted across the elastic medium (to the ear)? | The pattern of compression and rarefaction is propagated along a wave of mechanical pressure and is funneled into the ear by the pinnae |
| When can the process of sound transmission occur? | When there is an elastic medium present, NOT in space (or a vaccum) as there are no molecules |
