Shogun, Daimyo and Samurai Shogun: Military leaders that controlled Japan Daimyo: Regional landowners allowed to rule small areas in return for providing loyalty and military support to the shogun Samurai: Warriors who swore allegiance to the Shogun- also acted as tax collectors and policemen.
Religious Beliefs: Shinto, Buddhism and Confucianism Shinto: believe in a number of different gods and sacred ancestor spirits known as kami Buddhism: Depending on how you live you life, you can come back as a better of worse person in your next life. Confucianism: Live your life by a set of rules, such as be kind, don't lie, help people, etc.
Tokugawa Shogunate The Tokugawa Shogunate started when the warlord Tokugawa Ieyasu was declared shogun in 1603. This was followed by a long period of peace, in which Ieyasu built a new capital in Edo (Tokyo).
The Bushido Code and seppuku Like the code of chivalry, the Bushido code was a code of honour that the samurai had to follow. An example is benevolence- showing kindness towards others and those in need. Seppuku: Ritual suicide. This occurred when the samurai was captured in battle- it was an act to spare their family from disgrace.
The Red Seal and sakoku. The Red Seal was a permit that allowed boats to dock in the Japanese harbours to trade. Only 12 European and 11 Chinese boats were allocated these ever. Sakoku: the isolation period where no one was allowed to leave or enter Japan.
