Question Answer
Hardware Actual physical pieces of electrical equipment.
Server A computer or program which serves the needs of other computers. It runs special server software to service the requirements of the users (clients). There are several types of servers, including file servers and printer servers on a local area network, and web and email servers that manage communication with the internet.
Router A piece of hardware that connects two or more networks. Data from the ISP is sent into the network. The router directs the data packets to their correct destinations, It also handles data travelling in the other direction. Routers can be described as ‘directors of traffic’ for networks.
Client A computer which uses the services provided by the server.
Internet Backbone The principal data routes between large, strategically interconnected computer networks and core routers on the Internet.
Internet Packets A formatted block of data sent over networks and the internet. A packet contains the addresses of the sender and destination, the data and error checking.
Bandwidth The bit-rate of available or consumed information capacity expressed typically in metric multiples of bits per second. This measures how much data can be carried over a network.
LAN - Local Area Network Local Area Network
NAP - Network Access Point An interchange facility where Internet service providers (ISPs) interconnect with each other.
TCP - Transmission Control Protocol The protocol that takes data from a user’s application program and passes it to the IP for transfer across the internet. The reverse operation is performed at the destination computer. The TCP reassembles the data from individual packets and forwards them to the user’s application program.
FTP - File Transfer Protocol A standard protocol which allows files to be transferred between two computers on a TCP-based network. It's commonly used to download programs to a computer from other servers and to upload web pages that you have created to the server that's hosting them on the internet.
IP - Internet Protocol Is for relaying information across networks. Its routing function enables inter networking, and essentially establishes the Internet.
ISP - Internet Service Provider ISPs provide a cost-effective gateway for people and organisations to get onto the internet. In the UK, the most popular ISPs are British Telecom, Virgin Media and Sky. Direct connection to the internet would be very costly otherwise.
ISP services A company that provides individuals and other companies access to the Internet and other related services such as Web site building and virtual hosting. In addition to providing a gateway to the internet, ISPs normally provide additional services such as email. Many also provide web space for the development of websites, technical support and troubleshooting.
PoP - Point of Presence An access point to the internet. Normally, it is a location which contains all of the hardware which allows internet users access to the internet. An Internet Service Provider (ISP) may operate several PoPs in their area to allow good access to the internet.
Ethernet Cable Used to connect a user to a network.
Modem A combined device for modulation and demodulation, for example, between the digital data of a computer and the analogue signal of a telephone line.
